Wallbarn – Case Study

Wallbarn operates in an extremely competitive industry and approached us to help increase their on-line visibility through their website and Wallbarn-LogoSocial Media channels.

It was their goal to rank well for specific industry related keywords in a market which already includes a number of well established competitors operating with significant on-line marketing budgets.

In addition to achieving an increase in traffic they also wanted to improve their on-line conversions to attract more enquiries.

About Wallbarn

Wallbarn are a Surrey based company specialising in the manufacture and supply of top quality materials for use in waterproofing, structural engineering, flat roof finishes, soil stabilisation and filtration.

They sell a range of simple, durable and easy to install materials throughout the world. Their products are made to the highest specifications and Wallbarn have developed a reputation for low cost as well as fast and efficient deliveries, along with giving their clients full technical support and peace of mind.

The Goals

The goals of our client were to increase their overall levels of sales and enquiries via their website for terms related to ‘Green Roofing’, ‘Geotextiles’, ‘Timber Decking Tiles’ along with a number of other related key terms.

Before the upgrade of their website, the traffic that was generated was strong but left definite room for improvement as it didn’t give them the opportunity to take advantage of current rankings within search engines.

Wallbarn stated that their goal was to be able to achieve high rankings for keywords that would bring a significant amount of traffic to their website and in turn allow them to maximise the conversion rate of web visitors.

The Strategy

Because Wallbarn’s original website was designed in standard HTML, we strongly believed that a re-design incorporating the WordPress CMS would offer the desired Facebookresults.

Through our extensive research into the market and keywords associated with it, we were able to pinpoint the specific areas and keywords that we would be able to exploit in the search engine rankings. By establishing Wallbarn in the search engine rankings for their chosen products we would be able to bring people to the site with a great chance of converting them from visitors to customers.

It was also important that we enabled Wallbarn to engage with the community. Social media is an important tool in the engineering industry and through a combination of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and a dedicated YouTube channel, we have been able to tap into an on-line community for the site that would help engage their customers, whilst spreading information related to Wallbarn and their products across social media channels.

Our overall strategy was to increase conversions and traffic through targeting specific keywords where other engineering sites are not as visible, as well as communicating with the community with social media, blogging and product content.

Project Specifications

  • Create a new user-friendly website designed to highlight the complete range of Wallbarn’s services using WordPress as the CMS.
  • Transfer all existing relevant information from the old site to the new.
  • Create a comprehensive Social Media platform, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  • Implement effective SEO techniques to ensure the website is ‘Google friendly’.
  • Add a ‘Case Study’ section highlighting a variety of different projects.
  • Create a specific section focusing on all aspects of ‘Green Roofing’.
  • Incorporate a blog which would allow a constant stream of relevant industry information and insight.

Information and Inspiration

We knew that it was important that Wallbarn Websitewe designed a website which would grab the reader’s attention from the moment they arrived whilst retaining an air of ‘user-friendliness’.

We therefore designed the website to maximise its space and display its information in a clear and readable way whilst retaining the overall feel and aesthetic appeal of their previous website.

We have utilised large, visual tabs and drop down menus on the homepage in order to emphasise the important information available through the website.

Intelligent Styling

As well as having the ability to inform, it is also absolutely essential that we ensure any business website is designed to look and feel relevant to the subject area, so for Wallbarn we kept a high level of continuity by using the existing business colour scheme along with utilising the trade related imagery to help engage the users with their respective interest and immediately lets them know that they are in the right place.

Search Engine Optimisation

By clearly establishing the areas which Wallbarn wanted to target, we utilised a combination of on-page and off-page techniques to significantly increase the search engine visibility of the website.

SEO Services and Strategies utilised:

  • Targeted keyword phrase research using proven SEO keyword tools to identify the best SEO keyword phrases
  • Analysis of competitor website SEO strategies to allow for effective targeting of specific keyword phrases
  • Applying fully optimised meta-tag standards to all relevant pages
  • SEO copy writing current on-page content to ensure effective targeting by Search Engine spiders
  • Submission of XML Sitemap to Webmaster Tools format to website core directory

The Results

Over the first 3 months of this campaign we have:

  • Increased visits to the site by 48.4%*
  • Increased Unique Visits to the site by 29%*
  • Increased Page Views on the site by 13%*

*Metrics are calculated by comparing month on month statistics from previous years against the current year’s results – 1st January – 31st March – 2013 to 1st January – 31st March – 2014.

The Top 6 Web Design Mistakes

No. 1 – Where’s The Search Box?

The subject matter of the website is irrelevant, it could be a huge corporate website or a blog focused on World of Warcraft, the addition of a search box to the website is crucial.

Not everyone will instinctively know where to go when visiting a website, especially for the first time. They may be looking for something that is hidden within the website but the addition of a search box will help to ensure that visitors can easily find what they want.

No. 2 – Poor Legibility

The most innovative and visually pleasing web designs will all be for nothing if visitors cannot read the text when they arrive.

Some web designs incorporate the most unusual font styles and sizes making reading a pain. Don’t make this mistake with yours!

No. 3 – Make Sure Your Website is Organised

Do you read every word on a page or scan for useful information? The majority of people choose to scan so make sure that your website is organised accordingly.

Whilst some (poor) designers just put a block of text on the web page, always make sure that you do not neglect headings, sub-headings, bullets, keywords, paragraphs, etc.

No. 4 – Don’t Let Users Get Lost

Effective navigation simply cannot be more important within a website. Users MUST be able to find their way around easily.

No. 5 – Unfriendly Screen Resolution

This one is thankfully a little more uncommon now but the days of visiting a website only to find that we have to scroll horizontally to view all of the content are sadly still not completely behind us.

This is an absolute no-no in modern web design. A good designer will develop websites that fit on most screen sizes.

No. 6 – Over Complicated Forms

Registration forms can be tricky but ask yourself, how much information do you actually need from your customer?

Only make registration fields mandatory if they have to be. Name, e-mail address, phone number on enquiry fields will nearly always be enough.

The Importance of Google Places Accounts

Tell Them Everything

Make sure that you add your hours of business (remembering to update if they change). Few things for a customer are more infuriating than turning up and finding the business is closed when it said it was open!

Your listing can be elevated to another level by including photos and videos as well. It can often be a stroke of genius to ensure that you include a view of your shop front as seen from any direction so people can recognise it as they approach.

And of course, photos and videos are a powerful way to appeal to your target audience by showing them what they can expect from you – and how irresistible it is.

You may think your product or service is not visually appealing, but even photos of your staff looking friendly and approachable are valuable.

How To Prolong The Life of Your iPhone Battery

Hands up if this story sounds like a familiar one. You’re caught in the perfect storm of being as far away as possible from a phone charger, with your battery level dropping below 10% and an important phone call on the way at some point!

For all the wonders of iPhones (they are great aren’t they!), all of the good ideas seem to have been exhausted before they came to designing a battery that lasted as long as possible.

To try and help you prolong the life of your iPhone battery we have decided to draw up our list of 3 top tips to help squeeze every last drop of juice from your battery.

Follow these steps to make sure that the next time you think up the wittiest Facebook comment ever or take the perfect picture, your efforts to share it with the world is iphone5_ios7not thwarted by a duff battery!

Tip No. 1 – Check Your Settings

If your battery is on a mission to lose its power from the moment it is fully charged, there are a few changes that you can make to delay the inevitable for a little while longer.

If you are not using your phone or are out and about try the following:

  • Turn off Your Wi-Fi – This way your iPhone will preserve precious battery life because it will not constantly be searching for a Wi-Fi signal that’s not there.
  • Turn off Siri – Siri puts a surprisingly big strain on your battery. If you don’t use it regularly, turn it off to save some juice.
  • Turn off Auto Application Updates – This may be a bit of a pain to do this manually but auto updates can drain your battery at just the wrong time!
  • Turn Your Brightness Down! – Few things drain your phone’s battery more than having the brightness cranked right up. We’re not suggesting that you should keep it so low you can barely see it but you may be surprised how much longer your battery lasts when you turn the brightness down a little.

2. Use an Official Apple Charger

Don’t get cheap when it comes to your phone charger. We appreciate the official Apple chargers are more expensive than some of their knocked off counterparts but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Real bona fide Apple iPhone chargers will charge your phone faster than fake ones. Not to mention the fact that they are safer. There have even been reports previously regarding people being injured by fake iPhone chargers.

3. Grab an External Battery

This may seem like a little bit of a cop-out but if your iPhone just refuses to hold a charge no matter what your try to do, one of the best options is to buy an external battery to keep it going all day.
