3 Tips To Help Choose The Perfect Domain Name

Whether you are setting up a new business website or starting a blog the importance of choosing the right domain name is there for all to see.

When it comes to choosing a domain name which is effective and appropriate, we believe that there are a few guidelines which can help you along the way. Below you will find 3 of the most important tips that you can follow.

No. 1 – Choose a Unique Name

Whilst this may sound fairly obvious, you would be surprised how many people try to choose a name which is fairly similar to a well established Guildford Web Designcompany with the hope of riding their coat-tails to draw some traffic to their own website.

This is a tactic which is very unlikely to succeed and will only work towards undermining the identity of your own company.

Top Tip – Focus on the strengths of your company.

No. 2 – Keep It Simple

Short, catchy and relevant names are often the best idea for any domain name because they are easy for people to type and just as important, easy for people to remember.

Not only do short domain names help potential customers, they also look better on printed media and when used on Social Media channels as they unlikely to be shortened when posted.

Top Tip – Never underestimate the power of word of mouth marketing. Choosing a catchy and to-the-point domain name will make it as easy as possible for people to pass the details to their friends, family and colleagues should the need arise.

No. 3 – Eliminate The Guesswork

It is always good practice to ensure that your domain name automatically offers potential customers a good idea of what your company actually does without them having to visit your website if possible.

For example, the following domain name http://www.jandpplumbing.co.uk makes it immediately clear that this company is a plumbing company.

Top Tip – Choosing an obscure domain name may result in the need for an increased effort and expense when it comes to branding and market to ensure customers know more about your products and services.

Bonus Tip – Make it SEO Friendly

Are you looking to target a particular keyword in your future SEO efforts? Whilst many of the most popular domain names will already have been snapped up, if you can purchase something relevant to your target demographic, you may be able to put it to good use.

For example, if you are a plumber in London looking to target that particular geographic area, the domain name www.plumbers-london.co.uk could prove to be highly beneficial.

Have You Noticed a Change to Internet Explorer?

Whilst the majority of people now use Google Chrome as their primary web browser, there are still a number of die-hards who prefer using either IE (Internet Explorer) or Firefox to view the internet.

For anyone currently using Internet Explorer, you may be about to notice a significant change.

In early 2016, Microsoft cut support for older versions of Internet Explorer including IE 8, 9 & 10. Therefore if you have so far resisted upgrading browser-773215_1280either windows or your browser, you may very soon be left with no choice.

What Does This Actually Mean?

In practical terms, for Microsoft’s consumer operating systems, that means:

  • Windows 8.1: Internet Explorer 11
  • Windows 7 SP1: Internet Explorer 11
  • Windows Vista SP2: Internet Explorer 9

Therefore, if you are currently using one of these operating systems along with an older version of Internet Explorer, it will not be long before your stop receiving security updates and bug fixes from Microsoft.

What Can You Do?

If you are using Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP 1 or Windows 8.1 with a version of Internet Explorer other than the ones highlighted above, the best advice is to run a Windows Update as soon as possible and then install the latest version of your chosen web browser.

To be perfectly honest, if this is not a practice you are well versed in, there really is no excuse for doing this as you are exposing your computer to unnecessary security risks.

Updating your IE browser to the most recent update will ensure that it performs better than older versions (they are more stable, more secure, have more features and receive better support).

If you would like to ensure you have the latest version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer, please click here and then follow the on screen instructions.

Alternatively, if you feel that now is the perfect time for a change, check out the links below to download Firefox or Chrome to your computer.

Does Your Business Need an Instagram Account

‘A picture is worth a thousand words’

The emerging popularity of social media channels over the past few years has resulted in an increasing number of businesses seeking to utilise their potential to help promote their products and services.

Whilst many people are fully accustomed to using Facebook, Twitter and even LinkedIn, Instagram is a little more of a mystery due.
As we stated above, a picture can be worth a 1000 words and as such, Instagram offers the ideal method of using images related to your business to help promote your products and services.

A great example of this is a recent account that we set up for a driving school in Surrey called Surrey Driving Force. With a target demographic of instagram-1183715_1280people aged between 17 and 25, which ties in very well with many Instagram users, this popular driving school has been able to create quite a buzz in the local areas simply by posting pictures of many of the learner drivers who have just successfully passed their test.

This is clearly just one small example of the potential of Instagram as a Social Media platform and below we have outlined a few more.

No. 1 – Sharing Visual Content

Visual stimulants such as videos and images play a critical role in any online marketing plan. Offering the ability to get a message across without asking the target audience to read through a passage of text to get your point, this is a method of marketing which should never be overlooked.

By using the #hashtag feature (as utilised by Twitter), you can even help to stretch the reach of your posts even further.

No. 2 – Share Relevant Industry News With Followers

Posts and images do not have to be limited to information linked directly to your business. By sharing news about trends and noteworthy events in twitter-292994_1920your industry you will be able to connect with people by providing them with interesting information and news.

No. 3 – Running Events and Quizzes

There can be a bit of a grey area when it comes to running competitions via Social Media as some platforms are very strict on the upload of content, however there is absolutely nothing to stop you running events and quizzes to help create a little bit of a buzz as well as promoting brand awareness.

Therefore if you have not already created an Instagram account, you could really be missing out on the ability to interact and draw in a lot of potential new customers.

Footprint’s Quick and Easy Guide to Local SEO

There can be little doubt that a ‘Local SEO’ campaign can prove to be highly effective for any small or medium size business which places a premium on targeting customers based in their local area.

Despite the effectiveness of this strategy it is still one that is not commonly offered by SEO agencies and we strongly believe that this is a mistake on their part.

Below we have identified some of the key aspects of local SEO for you to view.

No. 1 – Identify the Right Keywords

Identifying and targeting the right keywords for your campaign is one of the most important parts of local SEO. Thankfully, the guess work is removedlocation-162102_1280 from this process by the presence of the Google Keyword Planner tool.

You can adjust the settings of this tool to allow you to view the keywords which are most searched for in your target area and we recommend using keywords which accurately describe the products or services that you are offering such as boiler repairs Oxted, plumbers Oxted.

Please Note – To access the Google Keyword Planner, you must have a current Google Adwords account.

No. 2 – Add a Blog To Your Website

We strongly recommend that all local businesses add a blog to their website which is regularly updated with new content. Google places a great deal of value on regularly updated websites and by adding content in the form of blogs which are created to be informative whilst targeting the right keywords, you will make it much easier for search engines to accurate assess your website.

You also have the option to link posts to other pages on your website which will help to improve the linking structure of your site.

Please Note – Sharing blog posts via Social Media channels offers a great way to promote your content and drive new traffic to your website.

No. 3 – Include Your Business Address and Phone Number

It is absolutely essential that websites display the business name, address and phone number on all pages. This is crucial part of any local SEO campaign but one that is commonly overlooked.

Please Note – You must ensure that the details are displayed in text form rather than an image to allow search engines to read the relevant details.google-485611_1920

No. 4 –Submit Your Details To The ‘Right’ Directories

This often comes as a surprise to many people but the importance of online directories should never be overlooked. Whilst it is unlikely that many people with access to a computer would turn to a hard copy of a directory such as the Yellow Pages, online directories are more popular than ever.

Not only does the submission of your business details offer another avenue for customers to visit your website or access your contact details, it also offers further confirmation to the search engines that your business does everything that you claim.

Please Note – Continuity is vitally important. Even using St and Street on different directories as part of your address will dilute the effectiveness of each citation.
