Top Tips For Creating a Google Plus Profile For Your Business

It was not too long ago that your options for letting customers know how to find you were fairly simple. A combination of making sure that you were in the phone directory and taking out an add in the local newspaper every now and again, along with word of mouth advertising was all that it needed to ensure that your local customers knew all about you.

  1. The 1st step towards creating create a Google Plus page, you must first have a personal profile (create yours by clicking here). From your profile you can click “Pages” in the left-hand menu, and you’re on your way.
  2. The 2nd step involves choosing a category that defines your business. If you’re a location-based business, like a restaurant or clothing shop, you’ll likely select “local business or store.” Entering your phone number will allow Google to find your business, confirm the information you enter is correct, and find your location on Google maps. Enter your external website, select who your content is appropriate for, review Google Plus terms and select continue. You now have a Google Plus page.
  3. The 3rd step to create a Google Plus page involves filling out your page to make it informative for followers (and potential customers). This includes describing your business, entering contact information like an email address and phone number, as well as choosing a branded profile photo (often a company’s logo).
  4. The 4th and final step involves putting a little bit of extra effort into making sure that you page is visually appealing. Add appropriate branding, from a captivating cover photo to interesting photos and videos that show what you’re all about. Also, include external links to your other web properties (website, Pinterest page, Tumblr, etc.) to help your Google search placement.

Taking Things To Another Level

Once your account has been created and verified with Google (they will usually send a postcard with a verification number to your business address), you will be ideally positioned to take full advantage of the all the features and tools which are available through G+.

Make sure that you promote your Google + profile by having a visible link to it from your website, include it within your e-mail signature, etc. It’s important to remember that just because it is easier to for people to find you because of your profile, does not mean that it will promote itself.

Some Tips To Engage

If you can find the time, try to engage with people. By adding people to your circles and following them, there is every chance that they will follow you back and then the channels of conversation will be open. Ultimately, this is the goal of all social media marketing – to create relationships and connections to build a loyal base of customers.

You can treat Google + like a blog, or alternatively, use it to direct people towards your existing blog. Make it worth their while to connect with you by giving them information they want.

How To Set Up a Google Plus Profile

Within just a short period of time of its launch, Google’s very own social network (known as Google+, or Google Plus) had accumulated over 10 million users, with numbers soon rising to over twice this level.

Whilst the overall number of people using Google + on a regular basis is still a little way below Facebook and Twitter, the numbers are continuing to rise at a fast rate.

By combining the best of Twitter and Facebook along with some benefits all of its own, Google + offers a platform which is easy to join, so why not try it out and see if it is something that you enjoy losing. 

All you need to set up an account is:

  • A Computer
  • An Internet Connection

If you want to give it a try, we have drawn up a simple to follow step-by-step guide on how to join Google +

Step 1: Go to the Google+ website. All sign ins for any Google application are all one sign in. If you have a Google account, sign in, if not, click on Create an account at the bottom of the page.

Step 2: After clicking on the ‘Create a new Google account’ option, you will be presented with a screen where you will need to fill in a number of personal details including:

  • Name
  • Preferred Username
  • Password, Birthday
  • Gender
  • Mobile Phone (optional)
  • Other email address.
  • You will also need to agree to Google’s terms and conditions

Follow the on-screen instructions and click submit.

Step 3: After setting up your account, you will be prompted to continue into Google +.

Step 3: On the next page, Google+ will ask you if you want to add anyone that it thinks you might know to your friends list. This is optional and only needs to be completed if you want to.

Step 4: After completing the previous step, you will be asked if you would like to follow other pages that might interest you. Again, choose if you wish or click Continue. It may prompt you if you don’t pick anything at this point, but you are not obliged to choose anything and can continue if you wish.

Step 5: The next stage of the set-up process will offer you the opportunity to add a photo to your profile. You have two options here, you can either Snap a photo with your webcam or you can upload a photo from your computer.

Click on your choice and follow the on-screen prompts to upload your picture.

Step 6: Once you have uploaded a picture you may also like to complete further information about yourself such as where you went to school or where you work  If you don’t want to complete this, just click Finish. 

Step 7:  You are now ready to start using Google+!!

How to create a Google Account for your business

There are currently somewhere in the region of 540 million active Google+ users. That’s a lot of people. But you’ve got a Facebook page, a Twitter profile and a YouTube channel already, do you really need another social media account? How to set up a Google+ account

The answer, very simply, is “yes”. Google+ may not be as big as Facebook, or as instantly easy to use as Twitter, but it’s importance to business is far greater. Not only will you be connected to the aforementioned 540 million other Google+ users, but you’ll be eligible to use all of Google’s free online tools as well. Not too bad, eh? But that’s not all… Want to climb the rankings over the Google search engine? Create a Google account. Being verified with a Google+ account/page is just another rung in the ladder of rankings.

In a similar way to Facebook, you need an account in order to set up a page for your business. You can set up an account in a few very quick steps:

Setting up a Google+ Account1. Open any Google page – e.g. www.google.com, and click the Sign Up button in the top right

2. Enter your details and choose a username (which will become your new gmail account email address)

3. Click next and your account has been created. Easy peasy.

4. You’ll then be led through a wizard-like process in order to add details to your account.

You’ve now got a Google+ Account, you can add people to your “circles” and use the Google+ tools, like: Adsense, Adwords, Analytics, Docs & Webmaster Tools. Just use your newly created login details to get in to them all. More importantly, you can now create business pages…

How to create your Google+ Business Page

You can set up a business page as quickly and easily as you set up your account. The following steps will show you how:

1. Go to http://plus.google.com/pages/create

2. Select the category that most closely represents your business: Local business or Place, Product or Brand, Company, Institution or Organisation, Arts, Entertainment or Sport or Other. Google+ listing

3. The next screen requires you to type in your business name, then click the magnifying glass. If you’re business has already been verified with Google Maps, it will appear here and you can select it. If not, click the option marked “No, these are not my businesses” and create your own listing.

4. You’ll then be asked to verify your business by post or telephone. Select the option most relevant to you, and you’ll be sent a PIN number that you will need to enter on to your page as soon as you receive it.

5. Your account has now been created. You will be taken to the shell of your account, where you’ll be prompted to add details about your business, pictures, etc. (NB – You can still add all your details even if you’re waiting for your PIN to arrive via post).

6. In the top left, there is a small blue icon. Hover your cursor over this and you’ll see a drop down menu, where you can access your dashboard, settings (to make any changes) as well as a host of other options.

7. Clicking on the “Change cover” button will allow you to change the large picture on your page. Ensure that any picture you put is of the correct size, above 2120×1192 pixels.

These steps will enable you to create a Google account, but there is a lot more to Google+ than this. Next time, I’ll go through how to activate the Google Web Tools with your business.

Should My Business Be On Google Plus?

According to a recently written Global Web Index report, Google Plus has now overtaken Twitter to become number 2 on the most used social media platform league table. The report didn’t stop there though, it concluded that not only is Google Plus now the second most used social platform  in the world, Google’s social networking channel has now also passed Twitter in terms of social share.

These findings point strongly towards the fact that if you’re not already on board with Google+, the time to join is right now!

Share your content along with others’ content that you find of value and as each article is shared, you will be creating another link back to your website.
