A Few Tips To Help Rise Up The Google Rankings

Whilst there are lots of theories about the factors that Google uses to create its rankings, the truth is that no-one truly knows. However, experience has taught us that a variety of techniques can help us to ensure that our clients get a push up the rankings.

Are You Overlooking These?

Below we have outlined a few aspects of web design and SEO which can often be overlooked but can play a critical in any SEO campaign.

These include but aren’t limited to:

  • Is Your Website Using HTTPS?Google confirmed that it uses HTTPS as a ranking factor. This can be important because any site that uses HTTPS will ensure that all users’ date is encrypted. Therefore improving both the safety and experience of the user.
  • Addition of Fresh Content – It is commonly believe that Google loves the addition of fresh pages to a website. Don’t panic though, whilst it is always a good idea to keep your website fresh and up to date, old pages are very unlikely to be disregarded.
  • Make Sure Your Website Has a Sitemaps– Linking your website to a sitemap and then submitting to Google will let Google know precisely which pages are on your website.
  • Is Your Website The Hare or the Tortoise?– We live in an impatient world! If your website does not load quickly, there is every chance that users will head elsewhere. Google is widely believed to prioritise websites which load quickly, particularly with mobile searches.
  • Do Your Visitors Bounce From Your Website?– It is often the case that a lower bounce rate = higher rankings. The better the experience offered by your website, the more likely that Google will offer better rankings.
  • Keep URLs Short & Sweet– Whilst internet users can be impatient, so can Google! If your long tail URL contains more than 5 words, Google may start to disregard it. Short and to the point is the order of the day!

How To Choose The Right Domain Name

The answer to this is pretty obvious, or is it? Whilst many people instinctively choose their business name as their domain, not all wish to do this. Below we have outlined a couple of areas which we believe you should focus.

Area No. 1 – Keep it Short & Catchy

Snappy domain names help potential customers and also look better on printed media and when used on Social Media channels as they unlikely to be shortened when posted. How To Choose The Right Domain Name

Choosing something short, catchy and relevant is often the best idea for any domain name, simply because they are easy for people to type and just as important, easy for people to remember.

Area No. 2 – Get Straight to the Point

It is always good practice to ensure that your domain name automatically offers potential customers a good idea of what your company actually does without them having to visit your website if possible.

For example, the following domain name http://www.dewdneylandscaping.co.uk makes it immediately clear that this company is a landscaping company.

Top Tip – Whilst some people like to go for something weird and wonderful, it’s important to remember that choosing something too  obscure may actually result in the need for an increased effort and expense when it comes to branding and market to ensure customers know more about your products and services.

Bonus Area – Domain Names Can Be SEO Friendly

If you are looking to target a particular keyword with your SEO efforts, you may be able to factor this into your thinking.

For example, if you are looking to sell windows in Surrey, it could be worth exploring whether the domain name www.windows-surrey.co.uk is still available?

Does Google Favour Secure Websites?

It is widely acknowledged that Google is continuing to favour secure websites with the latest update to the Google Chrome browser.

You may have noticed websites are now flagged as ‘unsecure’ in the tool bar on the left of the URL. If they collect payment information but are not currently using the recommended HTTPS protocol, they will be unsecure.

Please Note – Firefox have now published a similar update which highlights websites which are insecure but require important details.

Is It Easy To Move From HTTP to HTTPS

Moving from HTTP site into a HTTPS one is a fairly simple process much like any other website migration.

We will implement a series of 301 redirects to alert search engines to the change of URL and to ensure that anyone clicking on the old links will instead be directed towards the newly created URLs.

The basic transition process from HTTP to HTTPS is as follows:

  • Purchase an SSL certificate
  • Contact the hosts to install your new SSL certificate
  • Re-direct all old HTTP links to new HTTPs links

We would recommend leaving this process to us. Whilst it may sound easy to complete, there are a variety of different packages available and you may end up spending more money than necessary completing the process yourself.

What Happens If I Don’t Change?

Whilst initially the impact from the outside is very small, Google has confirmed that site rankings will be better for HTTPS sites.

The functionality of your website will remain the same although having your website flagged as unsecure is very likely to result in customers thinking twice before submitting any sensitive details through your website.

It’s Never Been More Important To Focus on Local SEO

Local SEO has always been important but with Google reducing the number of local search results from 7 to 3, the importance of employing the safest practices is now absolutely essential.

Google’s decision to reduce the number of Maps listings is linked directly to mobile search results. The “Three-pack” search results now ensure that desktop search results mirror those on mobile by providing additional space for map results and reviews, but obviously results in reducing the number of listings which can obtain these top rankings.

Please Note – It is very important to remember that these search results are often based on the location of the person making the search. Therefore these “three-pack” listings are highly likely to change very often.

Below we have outlined 2 of the most important ways to maintain those all important positions.

No. 1 – Never Underestimate The Power of Reviews

As a part of the updated algorithm, Google has removed much of the information that was previously displayed. Whilst precise addresses now rarely display, one aspect of the listing that has SEOremained intact are the starred reviews remain. Therefore, any business hoping to crack the top three listings and enhance the traffic through them needs to make sure they’ve got a regular flow of reviews genuine reviews.

No. 2 – Focus Your Key Terms

Trying to make your business a ‘jack of all trades’ is no longer a viable option. As people become better at narrowing their searches, you no longer need to focus on all encompassing keywords in order to drive traffic. For example, rather than targeting the term ‘plumber’, ‘emergency plumber’ could be ideal.

Still a little unsure if these listings can help your business? Check out the details below for further confirmation.

What Are The Benefits of Obtaining a Google Maps Listing?

The benefits of having your business listed on Google Local include:

  • Google Maps listings typically appear at the top of the search results pages. Therefore they are very likely to be the first thing that people see.
  • Accessing Google Maps listings on a mobile phone or smart device will offer customers an easy way to either call your business or get directions to your location.
  • Offers easy access to the impartial ratings left by current and previous customers. This can go a long way towards giving new customers confidence in your products and services.
  • Potential customers visiting your listing are very likely to be local to your business. This can offer a definite advantage over businesses based further afield.

What Does This Recent Update To Google’s Algorithm Mean To You

With the balance of internet users now turning to mobile devices to complete their online searches, it can be no surprise that Google is now turning more attention to those users.

Whilst Google constantly updates its algorithms to try and produce the best possible results for its users, a recent change has the potential to be significant. This change is known as the ‘mobile Googlefirst index’.

What Is the Mobile First Index?

What better way to explain than to let Google have their say –

“To make our results more useful, we’ve begun experiments to make our index mobile-first. Although our search index will continue to be a single index of websites and apps, our algorithms will eventually primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank pages from that site, to understand structured data, and to show snippets from those pages in our results. Of course, while our index will be built from mobile documents, we’re going to continue to build a great search experience for all users, whether they come from mobile or desktop devices.”

Haven’t Google Made Moves In This Direction Before?

Google have made moves into the mobile search market before, most notably with their ‘mobilegeddon’ updates in 2015 and 2016. Both of these were designed to reward websites which were Googledesigned with mobile usability in mind.

Whilst Google is currently focusing on ensuring that webmasters take at least some efforts to ensure their websites are ‘mobile friendly’, it is certainly worth taking the time to go that extra mile if possible.

Please Note – You can find out if your website is mobile friendly by clicking on the following link and entering your URL – https://search.google.com/search-console/mobile-friendly

Basically, our take on this update is that if the desktop version and mobile version of your website differ greatly, Google will now view your mobile version as the first choice website.

What Do We Recommend?

The good news is that at Footprint Web Design, we design all of our sites to be fully ‘mobile friendly’ and therefore no major changes are required.

Below are a couple of methods that we utilise to ensure this is the case.

  • Use Responsive Web Designs – This type of web design technique will ensure that your website displays and works perfectly on all devices.
  • App Development – Although Google’s new ‘mobile first’ index is focused on mobile based websites, the development of a dedicated app for your business can lead to a great user experience
