3 Tips For Successful Blogging

There are a variety of ways that blogs can help your website, from offering the perfect way to add fresh content to your website to get in Google’s good books, the addition of a blog to your website is all positive!

However, it is important to note that adding a blog to your website is not enough on its own, you actually have to use it! You don’t need to go crazy, a blog a week should be fine and is enough to ensure that visitors to your website know that your website is regularly updated.

To help you along the way, we have identified 3 steps to help make your blog successful.

Step 1: Put Aside Some Time

This may be the hardest part. We understand that your time is precious and you may want to do other things with your spare time (if you have any!).

Don’t forget though that blogging is a form of marketing that can keep on giving. You don’t need to dedicate 1 day a week to writing a blog, anywhere from 30 mins to an hour should be enough to write a quality blog.

Step 2: Choosing The Right Subjects

Whilst this may seem tricky, many effective blogs are written about fairly basic subjects. For example, if you are a plumber, do you know of any ways your customers could save a bit of money during the expensive winter heating months? If so, why not write a blog about it?

Do you have a new product or service you would like to promote? Have you seen a recent story in the press that you would like to tie in? Anything from 300 to 500 words will be absolutely fine and you will be amazed how quickly this can come together once you start typing away.

Pick a catchy title ‘5 ways to save money this summer’ for example and start typing!

Top Tip – If the creative juices are flowing and you have 2 or 3 good ideas, keep a note and put them aside for another day.

Blogs, or ‘Web Logs’, are online journals that are updated frequently, sometimes even daily. An update, (also called an entry or a post) can be anything from just a few lines to pages and pages of text. The most effective blogs, however, typically contain between 400 & 600 words.

Blogs are one of these best ways to engage your client base, advertise offers/opportunities and improve the visibility of your business online (SEO), and they are only going to become more important throughout 2019.

Your blog can be used for anything as well, not just information relating to your own business, but anything which you think your clients and customers would be interested – information that will keep them clicking onto your page.

Even the most seemingly random of topics, with the right voice, can be made over to appear interesting and relevant.

Follow these top tips when starting your blog:

  1. Decide upon and develop a writing style that is appropriate to your business. What would work best for your intended audience? Informal and chatty, or Formal and serious?
  2. Post regularly, even if they’re not all essays! At the very least once a week.
  3. Enable your readers to comment on your blog. This level of interaction is vital to the business-client relationship.
  4. Before you start blogging, spend some time visiting other blogs. You can learn a lot about the do’s and don’ts of blogging by reading others. Your suppliers’, rivals’, clients’ and other successful blogs are all mine of information.
  5. Make a note of everything you think could be turned into a blog. Keep a list of links to interesting news articles or developments, if an idea pops into your head when you’re not at your desk? Make a note of it on your phone!
  6. Use links and images. No one wants to look at a page full of dry text; appropriate and entertaining images break up the flow of the blog. They also provide invaluable keyword search opportunities, if properly labelled and tagged. Links in your blog to relevant pages on your site will keep people on your website! Links to other sites, or supporting articles add credence to your blog that is also crucial to your SEO.
  7. Use tags. Like keywords, tags can be used in blogs to highlight particular text to a search engine – all helping to attract other viewers to your blog and, ultimately, your website.
  8. Link your blog to all your social media channels. This will let all your followers know when new content has gone up – keeping them in the loop and encouraging them to visit your site.

If you keep all these points in mind, you’ll have no problem producing a relevant, interesting and successful blog.

It can be all too easy to misuse categories, with a common mistake being the creation of a new category for each post that is added. For any small to medium sized blogs, somewhere from 10 to 15 categories are likely to be all that is needed.

No. 2 – Choosing ‘Catchy’ Titles

The vast majority of bloggers are well versed in the importance of targeting relevant keywords in their efforts to get their blog noticed. Whilst including keywords and keyword variations in your copy is good practice, don’t stop there! Varying the title of the blog post and the title tag element is another crucial step in helping to enhance the effectiveness of your blog.

Failure to do this will not negatively impact SEO but by taking the steps needed to vary your article title and title tag and working in alternative keywords, your content will be able to work even harder for you.

Top Tip – The more keyword variations in your content, the more opportunities your content has to rank in more searches.

No. 3 – Make It Easier To Share

The additional of social sharing buttons is a proven prompt for people to share content resulting in the improved distribution of your content via social channels. This can also help to expose your content to new audiences.

From an effectiveness perspective, the more people that share your content, the greater the chances of getting mentions and all important back links. Also sharing helps your content get discovered faster; and the quicker it’s found, the sooner it shows up in the index.

Punctuation and structure may sound like the absolute basic of basics, it is amazing how many people still believe that it is ok to add huge blocks of text which are not broken up into relevant paragraphs and instead expect readers to fight their way through it!

Using paragraphs and punctuation can ensure that your content is far easier on the eye and much easier to read.

Tip No. 3 – Don’t Write Too Much!

Whilst it is widely believed that Google likes lengthy articles, the same cannot be said for humans! Rather than aiming for a re-writing of War and Peace, we believe that golden number for any online article should be a minimum of 300 words.

This should give you plenty of scope to get your point across without the concerns that the reader may lose interest.

Please Note – Typically, we try to aim for between 300 and 700 words and include any target keywords between 3 and 6 times.
