Taking a Closer Look at SEO

Whilst an attractive and fully functional website certainly offers a number of benefits to any business, without the implementation of effective SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), the chances are no-one will be able to find it. A sobering thought isn’t it!

Taking Your Website To Another Level

The implementation of effective SEO should play a pivotal role in the process of designing a quality website but is one that can easily be mishandled office-625893_1920without the required knowledge and expertise needed to implement the right measures.

Looking at the Key Aspects

There are several key aspects to the successful optimisation of website and only by understanding that there is no ‘one size fits all’ technique to SEO and web design Surrey will we able to achieve the best possible results on a consistent basis.

There are many different ways to achieve the desired ranking results but we believe that a concerted and sustained campaign which is built through the correct identification of relevant keywords and the implementation of a combination of on-page and off-page techniques, along with intensive social media marketing (Facebook, Twitter etc) will play all important roles in the quest to move your website towards the top of the Google rankings.

Reading Between The Lines

It is important to note at this point that although you may find web design and SEO companies out there who guarantee the top places for your google-485611_1920website and related key search terms, this is not actually possible to guarantee!

At Footprint, you can be certain that we will improve the traffic to your website and we will improve the Google ranking but because major search engines are constantly changing the algorithms that are used to determine the ranking for websites, guaranteeing that we will reach the top stop is simply not possible.

However, one thing we can guarantee is that we will work tirelessly for you to stay ahead of the curve and our record of achieving great results for our clients tells us that this is a battle that we have a great chance of significantly enhancing the online profile of your business.

Proven SEO Techniques

Footprint’s Search Engine Optimisation techniques take a wide variety of factors into account and include a variety of both ‘on-page’ and ‘off-page’ methods which we tailor to the individual needs of your website.

On-Page SEO

The implementation of effective ‘on-page’ techniques is a critical component for the success of any SEO campaign. Without creating a solid foundation for your website, any other efforts are likely to be destined for failure and as such, ‘on-page’ work is always going to be our primary target.

The initial ‘on-page’ techniques used at Footprint involve targeting a number of different areas, including:

  • Meta tags
  • Heading tags
  • Contextual linking
  • General HTML code

The Next Stage

Once the initial stage has been completed, we will move on to the on-going creation of a number of ‘key term’ and location based pages which we will add to your website.

By tapping into a number of different packages which allow us to track the number of times particular terms are searched for on a monthly basis, we will create a number of targeted, original, hand-written, keyword-related pages all of which are designed to help draw potential customers to your website.

For example, if your are a Surrey based driving school, we want to make sure that when potential customers search for the term ‘Driving Lessons Surrey’, your website appears on Google’s first page.

This image highlights how effective a combination of our 'on-page' and 'off-page' techniques can be. By targeting the key phrase 'Driving Lessons Surrey' for our client Surrey Driving Force, we have managed to obtain 4 of the top 5 listings for the organic (non paid for) listings on Google's first page.

By targeting the key phrase ‘Driving Lessons Surrey’ for our client Surrey Driving Force, we have managed to obtain 4 of the top 5 listings for the organic (non paid for) listings on Google’s first page.

Off-Page SEO

There are a number of ‘off-page’ SEO techniques which we will explore for you with the goal of helping to increase the reach of your website.

Some of these techniques involve:

  • Directory submissions (Citations)
  • RSS feed submission (for websites with regular blog updates)
  • Guest blog posting
  • Link building

Please Note – With reference to the link building strategies that we utilise, it is important to note that whilst other companies may offer the ability to generate huge numbers of links to and from your website, it is very much quality rather than quantity that will provide the best results. It may well even prove to have a negative effect on your Google ranking if you are linked to many poor quality websites and as such, this is not something that we will even entertain doing for your website.

For a more in-depth analysis of how our SEO strategies have been used to great effect for our clients, please take a moment to read the following case studies:

Implementing Social Media

Social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook offer the perfect opportunity for businesses of all size to open up lines of communication with The Top 5 Online Marketing Mythsexisting and potential customers.

Reaching an audience of a substantial number through Facebook and Twitter takes a lot of hard work and dedication but are always worthwhile as these channels provide the maximum amount of positive exposure for your company.

A great example of this is Surrey Driving Force. One of the South East of England’s fastest growing driving schools and one of our major clients. Due to the number of younger people using Facebook and Twitter, the ability to post messages on these social mediums regarding successful driving test attempts for their learner drivers has led to a sharp increase in the number of enquiries received.

Assessing Your Website

Whilst many of our clients choose to boost their newly designed websites with one of our SEO packages, we also have many clients who come to us with an existing website which they feel could perform better.

To help us get to the bottom of any areas of weakness, we can provide you with a free diagnostic report of your current website. All you need to do is provide us with your URL and the terms you would most like to be ranked for and we will produce a report highlighting the current areas of strength and weakness.

Available SEO Packages

Unlike many of our competitors we do not believe in tying our clients into long term water tight contracts. Whilst we strongly recommend the benefits of undertaking a sustained SEO campaign focused on pre-agreed key terms and words to all of our clients, we want to work with you on a month by month basis to see how things are progressing to ensure that you are happy with all aspects of the work that we provide.

For more information regarding our available SEO packages, please click here.

Please Note – We do understand though that not all of our clients wish to look at SEO as a longer term proposition and because of this we also offer short term packages which are designed to give your website a one off overhaul and produce new content for a pre-determined number of key terms.

One of the Most Important Parts of SEO

We understand, perhaps better than most, that there is a wide ranging perception relating to SEO that it is complex and nearly impossible to understand.

In a constantly evolving landscape, it is easy to see why this may be the case but we would like to shine a light on some of the basics to help provide you with a little insight.

It is all too easy to get wrapped up in trying to figure out exactly what search engines are looking for and tailoring all of your efforts towards them.  However, whilst that cannot be completely ignored, the most important part of any SEO campaign is considering who you are targeting (i.e. your potential customers).

Creating The Right Content

With any website and any SEO campaign, it is essential that you make your audience your number one priority. By thinking like your audience and cms-265127_1920acting like your audience, you will be able to create content for your audience.

More than anything else, are you producing quality content? Are you getting your message across? Are you waffling on for pages when a few well chosen words would do? Are you providing a reason for people to spend more than a few seconds reading your pages?

These are just some of the questions to ask yourself in assessing whether you’re providing quality content. This is not the place to skimp since it is the cornerstone upon which nearly all other factors depend.

Tips For Creating Content

To help you along the way, we have drawn up a list of some of the most important tips to help provide the best possible start to creating engaging content for your website.

  • Spend some time making a decision on which writing style will be the most appropriate for your line of business and your audience? Informal and chatty, or Formal and serious?
  • Keep the flow of content to your website regular. Either in the form of landing pages or blogs.
  • For any blogs, enable your readers to comment on your blog. Creating the ability to interact with customers is absolutely essential.cms-265128_1920
  • Spend some time researching your competitor’s websites. Without actually lifting content straight from them, there is every chance that you will find some great ideas that you may be able to tailor for your own needs.
  • Always keep your eyes open. It can be amazing where you can find some great ideas for interesting and engaging content for your website.
  • Use links and images. No one wants to look at a page full of dry text; appropriate and entertaining images break up the flow of the blog. They also provide invaluable keyword search opportunities, if properly labelled and tagged. Links in your blog to relevant pages on your site will keep people on your website! Links to other sites, or supporting articles add a credence to your blog that is also crucial to your SEO.
  • Link your blog to all your social media channels. This will let all your followers know when new content has gone up – keeping them in the loop and encouraging them to visit your site.

The Top 5 Online Marketing Myths

With search engines and social media platforms all trying to push their pay-per-click options to help boost online traffic (think Adwords and Facebook post boosts), it can be all too easy to think that SEO has fallen down the pecking order when it comes to effective online marketing methods. However, the truth is very different.

For anyone who is still undecided whether to push forward with an SEO campaign to help promote their products and services, we have drawn up a list of 5 untruths which may could your judgement.

Myth No. 1 – SEO Simply Doesn’t Work

With figures suggesting that as many as 81% of all shoppers now conduct online searches before making a purchase, choosing to ignore online The Top 5 Online Marketing Mythsmarketing can be a very expensive mistake to make!

As people become more accustomed to using their computer, laptop, smart-phone and tablets to search for products and services, you simply must take steps to maximise your online presence if you wish to remain competitive in your market.

SEO works by making your making your website easy for both users and search engine robots to understand and without the implementation of effective SEO, your website is very likely to be fighting a losing battle.

Myth No. 2 – SEO is Too Expensive

One of the most common mistakes regarding SEO is viewing it as an expense rather than an investment. As opposed to pay per click advertising which disappears the moment you stop adding funds to your account, a well run SEO campaign can offer long term benefits.

When taking advantage of professional SEO services you will receive work tailored around a variety of complex tasks:

  • Industry research
  • Keyword analysis
  • Website optimisation
  • Link building
  • Monitoring and results analysis.

Each of these tasks takes time and effort — and there’s just no SEO without them. So while you do need to pay for someone to implement these tasks, keep in mind that SEO keeps bringing results long after you finish a project with the person.

Myth No. 3 – Traditional Marketing Is All That’s Needed

The Office for National Statistics reported that in 2014, 38 million adults (76%) in Great Britain accessed the Internet every day, 21 million more than The Top 5 Online Marketing Mythsin 2006, when directly comparable records began.

When you think about these staggering numbers, even if you estimate that a very small percentage of the users are likely to be interested in your products/services, the numbers are still going to be huge!

By not promoting your business online, you are going to be missing out on one of the biggest opportunities to grow your business. Perhaps even worse than this is the fact that forward thinking competitors may leave your business behind.

Myth No. 4 – SEO takes too long; PPC is faster.

Whilst there can be no denying that PPC offers fast results, this type of advertising is no more than a quick fix. PPC advertising will only remain visible whilst there is money in your account, the moment it dries up is the moment that you adverts will fail to show.

It is also worth considering what the initials PPC actually stand for. PPC actually means Pay Per Click, that’s right, you will get charged each time your advert is clicking upon, not each time it converts to a sale.

Although SEO can take longer to get off the ground, once things start to work, the results should be long term. The Top 5 Online Marketing Myths

2 SEO Tactics To Avoid

With so many SEO companies out there promising the world, how can you know who you can trust and who should be give a wide berth?

Taking a look at some of the services on offer, provide an excellent and accurate insight into whether your SEO providers are likely to try and cut any corners or try to follow the ‘white-hat’ SEO path.

Below we take a look at 2 of the outdated SEO methods which you should seek to avoid.

Tactic No. 1 – Attempting to Use Press Releases to Improve Rankings

Google stated all the way back in 2012 that links from press releases will not help SEO rankings so there is no point in using these as part of an SEO seo-793030_1280campaign.

Factoring Press Releases into an SEO campaign is an old fashioned and outdated method of trying to obtain links back to your website.

The thought process behind this concept is to create a PR containing hypertext links back to your website. You would then use the services or a press release distribution company who would batch release your PR in the home that it would be syndicated by other news outlets who will then keep your contact fully intact (including your back link).

This is not to say sending out a PR will not benefit your business but it is important to understand the limits of those benefits.

Your content may well reach the eyes of bloggers, reporters and others, and if this is your goal it may succeed. However, Google says that they will not benefit your rankings and therefore they are ineffective as an SEO technique.

Tactic No. 2 – Submitting Guest Blogs To Irrelevant Websites

The concept of submitting guest articles to be posted on other random websites is now outdated and can even be harmful for your website.

As with many aspects of SEO, this concept is something that started out working well but begun to be abused and is now therefore considered to be seo-758264_1280black-hat.

Whilst submitting guest blogs can still have some positive impact, it is absolutely essential that your content is only posted on sites which are high quality, and relevant to your business.

For guest posts to have any chance of benefiting your website, you must ensure that your content is not over-optimised (i.e. too many links/poor anchor text either in your post or your author bio), and you must take steps to ensure that you include links to a variety of authoritative and well-respected sources.
