Step No. 1 – Understanding Your Options

With so many Social Media channels available, all with their own individual strengths, it’s important to see which ones may prove to be beneficial for you.

Below is a little cheat sheet for some of the strengths of the common Social Media channels.

Twitter

This is ideal for:

  • Providing to the point updates
  • Communicating with customers
  • Using hashtags to tap into relevant streams

Instagram

This is ideal for:

  • Showing the visual side of your business
  • Reaching a wide audience
  • Targeting a younger generation

Facebook

This is ideal for:

  • Engaging with customers
  • Driving traffic to your website

Please note: The paid social advertising options can be perfect if you have a particular demographic that you would like to target.

Step No. 2 – Do Your Homework

The vast majority of Social Media updates take place in public. Therefore there is absolutely nothing stop you taking a look at what your competitors are doing to see if you can take any inspiration.

Take a look around to find the following information about your competitors Social Media habits:

  • Which channels are they using (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest)
  • Do they engage with customers &/or other business?
  • How frequently do they send out updates

Top Tip – Patience is a virtue! You may be raring to go but a little bit of homework can go a long way.

How To Set Up A Flickr Account For Business?

If you love the visual side of Social Media, Flickr could be just what you have been looking for. With images playing an increasingly important role in helping to showcase products and services, Flickr offers an excellent platform to get the most from your images.

Please Note – In order to do this, you will have to set up a Yahoo account if you do not already have one.

How to sign up for a Flickr account

Sign up for Flickr, where you can keep your entire library of pictures and share them with friends, family, or the world. All you need is a Yahoo account to join.

Create and use a new Yahoo ID

If you don’t have a Yahoo ID, don’t worry. It’s easy to create one. You can create a new Yahoo account with an existing non-Yahoo email address.

  1. Go to Flickr.
  2. Click Sign Up.
  3. Enter your name.
  4. Either enter your current email address or click I’d rather create a new Yahoo email address.
  5. Fill out your personal info.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Verify your phone number or email address.
  8. Click Let’s get started.

Use a Yahoo ID you already have

Important – Don’t use a Yahoo ID that’s already used on another Flickr account or it’ll break that Flickr account and you’ll need to contact us to get it fixed.

  1. Go to Flickr.
  2. Click Sign Up.
  3. Next to “Already have an account,” click Sign in.
  4. Enter your Yahoo ID and password.
  5. Enter your preferred Flickr name and username.
  6. Click Next.

 Important – Using Flickr for selling purposes is not allowed.

Sign up for Flickr to promote your business with photos of company culture, events, and office fun.

While multiple employees may manage it, the individual who registered and set up the account is its true owner. Per Flickr Terms, we can only assist the account owner, even if they leave the company.

So that no one loses access, be mindful of the account’s info:

  • Login info – username and password
  • Verification details – postal code, birthdate, contact email address and mobile number

Some Extra Tips

  • Do share interesting and original photos and videos
    Upload fresh, authentic material rather than product shots or staged, over-produced content that would be more at home in your product catalogue or latest advertising campaign.Photos that show off your organisation’s culture and personality will help you build loyalty for your brand and tell your story. For example, sharing behind-the-scenes photos of your products being made or of customers engaging with your organisation will show what you stand for and more importantly that you’re interesting and human. It’s not rocket science; the more unique, interesting content you share, the more interest you’ll receive in return.Please remember, Flickr is for photo-sharing—so use your account to share photos, not to sell things.
  • Do create a transparent and authentic identity
    Being open and trustworthy encourages people to interact with you. Here’s how to start on the right path:

    • Add a buddy icon and fill out details on your profile so people know who you are and can find you on Flickr.
    • Set up a personalised URL to help identify you.
    • Add meaningful titles and descriptions (but no price information or sales-y verbiage) to your content.

Here are some examples of organisations using Flickr in neat ways:

  • A bike shop owner shares photos of happy customers in his store.
  • A clothes manufacturer shares behind-the-scenes action from their factory.
  • A tech company shares a video of their community volunteer event.
  • A government space organisation shares photos of recent satellite captures.
  • An NGO shares their photos of disaster relief efforts.

Facebook Ratings and Reviews Have Changed!

Ratings and reviews have changed. Not our words, the words of Facebook and these changes have now made it easier for people to recommend your page than ever before.

The ‘Old’ Rating System Has Been Retired

Facebook have retired the old start rating system. This now means that when your customers would like to leave a review, they now have the option of either choosing to recommend or not recommend your page.

The addition of the recommendation tool to the platform is helping to make it easier than ever before to discover new events, places, services and things to do in the area, simply by calling upon the advice of family and friends. The process has been designed to be efficient and easy to use and should your customer wish to interact with you, the addition of the new call-to-action buttons will allow them to contact you within just a few seconds.

What Has Changed?

One of the main differences relates to leaving a new review. If you have already left a review (ranging from 1* to 5*), this will still be in place, however, if you would like to leave a new review, you will instead be presented with the question ‘Would you recommend……..?’, with just 2 options, either yes or no.

If you choose ‘yes’ you will be directed to a pop up which will allow you write a few words about which areas of the business you found to be positive.

If your experience was not as you hoped and you opt for the ‘no’ button, you will instead be offered the chance to write a few words about the area that you believe the business can improve.

A Great Opportunity

This update provides a huge opportunity for businesses (particularly those with a focus on local areas) as when someone recommends your business, your FB page will be tagged, which in turn will pull in a rich snippet showing your total reviews.

With reviews playing an increasingly important role in SEO, they are also essential to help potential customers realise that they are dealing with a trusted business.

A Few Keys To Help Generate Recommendations

As with generating reviews, it can be a little tricky to actually get people to take the time to leave a recommendation. However, we have outlined a few tips below which can help along the way.

  • Provide regular updates. People are very unlikely to recommend a page that hasn’t been updated for weeks
  • Ensure your business details are all up to date and correct. Include your bio, website, phone, address
  • Add a ‘call to action’ button to your page. Either a ‘Contact Us’ or ‘Message’ button can be really useful for customers.
  • Choose a great profile image (Don’t forget that this will be used in the snippet when your page is tagged)

Even More Good News!

We understand that no-one likes receiving a bad review! Whilst FB did offer the chance to respond to any poor (and positive) review which was very helpful, one of the major problems with the previous system was it was all too easy for someone to create a fake account and leave a malicious 1* review with no content. It was not possible to report or remove these reviews and this caused problems with the average rating.

Thanks to the implementation of the new system, it is now possible to report reviews which are clearly inaccurate or malicious to FB to allow them to take a closer look.

How To Setup A Google Plus Brand Account For Your Business

Within just a short period of time of its launch, Google’s very own social network (known as Google+, or Google Plus) had accumulated over 111 million users, with numbers still rising rapidly.

Whilst the overall number of people using Google + on a regular basis is still a little way below Facebook and Twitter, the numbers are continuing to rise at a fast rate.

By combining the best of Twitter and Facebook along with some benefits all of its own, Google + offers a platform which is easy to join, so why not try it out and see if it is something that you enjoy using. 

What Is Different Between A Plus Account And A Normal Account?

You and others can jointly manage a Brand Account through your own Google Accounts. You don’t need a separate username or password for a Brand Account.

A Brand Account can have multiple owners and people who manage it.

Setting Up A New Account

For your business, we strongly recommend creating a new brand account with a Google+ Page. The good news is that the process is quick and easy and can be completed by following just a few steps.

  1. On your computer, open Google+.
  2. At the bottom of the left-hand panel, click Brands.
  3. On the following screen, click Create Google+ Page.
  4. Create a brand account.
  5. On the following screen, under Enable Google+ for your brand, click Enable.
