It is widely acknowledged that Google is continuing to favour secure websites with the latest update to the Google Chrome browser.
You may have noticed websites are now flagged as ‘unsecure’ in the tool bar on the left of the URL. If they collect payment information but are not currently using the recommended HTTPS protocol, they will be unsecure.
Please Note – Firefox have now published a similar update which highlights websites which are insecure but require important details.
Is It Easy To Move From HTTP to HTTPS
Moving from HTTP site into a HTTPS one is a fairly simple process much like any other website migration.
We will implement a series of 301 redirects to alert search engines to the change of URL and to ensure that anyone clicking on the old links will instead be directed towards the newly created URLs.
The basic transition process from HTTP to HTTPS is as follows:
- Purchase an SSL certificate
- Contact the hosts to install your new SSL certificate
- Re-direct all old HTTP links to new HTTPs links
We would recommend leaving this process to us. Whilst it may sound easy to complete, there are a variety of different packages available and you may end up spending more money than necessary completing the process yourself.
What Happens If I Don’t Change?
Whilst initially the impact from the outside is very small, Google has confirmed that site rankings will be better for HTTPS sites.
The functionality of your website will remain the same although having your website flagged as unsecure is very likely to result in customers thinking twice before submitting any sensitive details through your website.
