It’s Never Been More Important To Focus on Local SEO

Local SEO has always been important but with Google reducing the number of local search results from 7 to 3, the importance of employing the safest practices is now absolutely essential.

Google’s decision to reduce the number of Maps listings is linked directly to mobile search results. The “Three-pack” search results now ensure that desktop search results mirror those on mobile by providing additional space for map results and reviews, but obviously results in reducing the number of listings which can obtain these top rankings.

Please Note – It is very important to remember that these search results are often based on the location of the person making the search. Therefore these “three-pack” listings are highly likely to change very often.

Below we have outlined 2 of the most important ways to maintain those all important positions.

No. 1 – Never Underestimate The Power of Reviews

As a part of the updated algorithm, Google has removed much of the information that was previously displayed. Whilst precise addresses now rarely display, one aspect of the listing that has SEOremained intact are the starred reviews remain. Therefore, any business hoping to crack the top three listings and enhance the traffic through them needs to make sure they’ve got a regular flow of reviews genuine reviews.

No. 2 – Focus Your Key Terms

Trying to make your business a ‘jack of all trades’ is no longer a viable option. As people become better at narrowing their searches, you no longer need to focus on all encompassing keywords in order to drive traffic. For example, rather than targeting the term ‘plumber’, ‘emergency plumber’ could be ideal.

Still a little unsure if these listings can help your business? Check out the details below for further confirmation.

What Are The Benefits of Obtaining a Google Maps Listing?

The benefits of having your business listed on Google Local include:

  • Google Maps listings typically appear at the top of the search results pages. Therefore they are very likely to be the first thing that people see.
  • Accessing Google Maps listings on a mobile phone or smart device will offer customers an easy way to either call your business or get directions to your location.
  • Offers easy access to the impartial ratings left by current and previous customers. This can go a long way towards giving new customers confidence in your products and services.
  • Potential customers visiting your listing are very likely to be local to your business. This can offer a definite advantage over businesses based further afield.

What Does This Recent Update To Google’s Algorithm Mean To You

With the balance of internet users now turning to mobile devices to complete their online searches, it can be no surprise that Google is now turning more attention to those users.

Whilst Google constantly updates its algorithms to try and produce the best possible results for its users, a recent change has the potential to be significant. This change is known as the ‘mobile Googlefirst index’.

What Is the Mobile First Index?

What better way to explain than to let Google have their say –

“To make our results more useful, we’ve begun experiments to make our index mobile-first. Although our search index will continue to be a single index of websites and apps, our algorithms will eventually primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank pages from that site, to understand structured data, and to show snippets from those pages in our results. Of course, while our index will be built from mobile documents, we’re going to continue to build a great search experience for all users, whether they come from mobile or desktop devices.”

Haven’t Google Made Moves In This Direction Before?

Google have made moves into the mobile search market before, most notably with their ‘mobilegeddon’ updates in 2015 and 2016. Both of these were designed to reward websites which were Googledesigned with mobile usability in mind.

Whilst Google is currently focusing on ensuring that webmasters take at least some efforts to ensure their websites are ‘mobile friendly’, it is certainly worth taking the time to go that extra mile if possible.

Please Note – You can find out if your website is mobile friendly by clicking on the following link and entering your URL – https://search.google.com/search-console/mobile-friendly

Basically, our take on this update is that if the desktop version and mobile version of your website differ greatly, Google will now view your mobile version as the first choice website.

What Do We Recommend?

The good news is that at Footprint Web Design, we design all of our sites to be fully ‘mobile friendly’ and therefore no major changes are required.

Below are a couple of methods that we utilise to ensure this is the case.

  • Use Responsive Web Designs – This type of web design technique will ensure that your website displays and works perfectly on all devices.
  • App Development – Although Google’s new ‘mobile first’ index is focused on mobile based websites, the development of a dedicated app for your business can lead to a great user experience

The 3 Step Guide To Creating The Perfect Website

To ensure that you have the ability to make the most from your website, there are 3 essential steps which must be followed:

Step No. 1 – Choosing an Attractive Design

The design of your site is crucial if you are going to make the user experience as easy as possible. All websites designed by the Footprint Web Design team will be created with the user experience at the forefront of our mind.

We will avoid unnecessary items that will make it harder for your audience to find what they are looking for whilst avoiding placing important information in graphics and on pictures, since search engines can’t read them.

Step No. 2 – Enabling Mobile Compatibility

Whilst having a website optimised for display on a mobile phone may have been considered to be an added bonus for many businesses throughout the UK, a change in policy by Google in regards to how they display search results when viewed through a mobile device could leave you lagging behind your competitors if your website is not mobile optimised.

Intricate desktop designs are unlikely to work as well on the small screen as they will on a pc and the functionality may also decrease.

Our minimalist and tailored ‘mobile ready’ designs are absolutely perfect for targeting visitors via their mobile device mobile device visitors.

Step No. 3 – Effective Search Engine Optimisation

Obtaining good search rankings are absolutely essential if you wish to draw as many visitors to your website as possible.

Search engines have been designed specifically to help guide people to the most appropriate websites based on the terms that are being searched for (your potential customers). If your site cannot be located by search engines or your content cannot be put into their databases, there is every chance that you will miss out on a tremendous amount of business.

We have been providing SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for business services for a number of years, and really understand what it takes to get your website to the top of the search rankings. 3 Ways SEO is Changing in 2017

There can be no doubt that SEO is constantly evolving. With trends and expectations updating at a lightning fast rate, ensuring that your website is keeping up is crucial if you want to ensure the maximum exposure.

Below we have outlined 3 of the most important changes that will affect SEO techniques in 2017.

Putting Mobile Indexing First

The statistics prove that more people than ever are using mobile devices to conduct their internet searches. Whilst mobile usability has often been an afterthought for many businesses, the SEOcontinued growth in mobile traffic has not gone unnoticed by Google. As such, Google has taken the inevitable step to change their index from desktop-first to a mobile-first model.

What does this mean for you though? As most people now use Google for mobile searches, it only makes sense for their intuitive ranking systems to look at the mobile version of a page instead of the desktop version. This will ensure that only the most relevant pages achieve the all important high rankings.

Website Loading Speed

It can come as no surprise that Google is increasingly acting upon something that is fairly obvious. A website that performs poorly is one that offers a poor user experience.

One of the primary factors in a poorly performing website is the speed at which it loads i.e. the slower the speed, the worse the experience. Therefore Google believes that sites offering poor user experiences deserve less promotion in search results.

Top Tip – Taking the steps to ensure YOUR website loads quickly have never been more important.SEO

The Continued Importance of Local SEO

Because nearly all modern day mobile devices can relate search results to the location of the person doing the search, local SEO has never been more important.

Understanding the way that people search can be absolutely pivotal to getting the most from local marketing and driving more enquiries and ultimately business through your website.
